MORGAN COUNTY — A Morgan County couple that previously had received praise for fostering and adopting children has been charged with dozens of felony charges, including child molesting, neglect of a dependent and promotion of human trafficking.
Brian and Sonja Stafford had their initial hearings last Thursday afternoon in the Morgan County Magistrate Court in front of Magistrate Terry Iacoli.
Sonja Stafford filed for divorce in May of this year, and it was granted Nov. 1. They have been living in separate locations.
According to Morgan County Prosecutor Steve Sonnega, the case began with a report to the Indiana Department of Child Services last spring. That agency notified the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, and Det. Sgt. Patrick Williams was assigned to be the lead investigator.
Sonnega said Williams spent around seven months working on the case. He interviewed around 40 people during that time before last week’s charges were filed.
