Mooresville talks fire dept. merger

 

MOORESVILLE — Members of the Mooresville Town Council have an important decision to make in the coming weeks — do they want to see the town’s and Brown Township’s fire departments merge to form a single fire territory, or keep the two departments separate. The council hears a presentation on the potential costs of the merger during its Dec. 17 meeting. Paige Sansone, a CPA with BakerTilly, told the council the merger could cause property taxes for Brown Township residents, which includes Mooresville, to increase. For unincorporated areas of Brown Township, according to Sansone, a taxpayer pays about $0.23 per $100 of net assessed value for fire protection. In Mooresville, a taxpayer pays around $0.12 per $100 of net assessed value for fire protection. “That’s important that we understand that, because if a fire territory should be established, those are the rates that will go away — those rates will be eliminated before we put on the fire territory rate,” Sansone said.
