MONROVIA — The Monrovia girls’ basketball team ended its regular season last Thursday with a 67-43 win over Indianapolis Scecina Memorial that topped off a seven-game winning streak that began Jan. 20 with a 63-12 win over Indianapolis Lutheran. Since then, the Bulldogs have scored in the 60s along with a 71-63 game over Covenant Christian.
Monrovia is now hosting sectional play, which started Tuesday against Park Tudor, after press time. The championship game is slotted for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Against Scecina last Thursday, lone senior Emery Newlin was honored for senior night. She was also gifted a basketball for scoring her 1,000th point to top off a stellar high school career.
Newlin finished Thursday night with 10 points, three rebounds, 12 assists and nine steals. Sophomore Grace Deaton led the Bulldogs with 18 points, three rebounds and three steals. Sophomore Willow Day added 13 points, five rebounds, an assist and four steals.
Sophomore Allie Tallent had eight points, four rebounds and four steals. Freshman Camryn Wolfe had eight points, four rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block. Freshman Ava Sims had three points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals, freshman Aliza Robertson three points and an assist, freshman Preslee Tauer two points, two rebounds and one steal, freshman Caelyn Arnold two points, one rebound and one steal and sophomore Harper Rahn with one rebound, two assists.
The Bulldogs had an impressive 26 steals total in the game that helped immensely with the win. They shot 6-for-19 from three, 21-for-41 from two and 7-for-20 at the line.
Against Greencastle on Jan. 28, Newlin led with 21 points, two rebounds, six assists, one steal and one block. Wolfe had a nice night with 17 points, four rebounds and two steals. Freshman Zoie Walls added eight points, 10 rebounds, four assists, five steals and three blocks. Tallent added seven points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal. Deaton finished with six points, a rebound, two assists and four steals. Sims added three points and two rebounds. Daly had two rebounds and a steal and Tauer had a steal.
Next up for the Bulldogs is the IHSAA Class 2A Sectional 42 held at Monrovia.
