Historic home gets new lease on life

MOORESVILLE — The 172-year-old house where town founder Samuel Moore and his wife Eliza last lived is fresh from major renovation intended to both preserve the historic building and provide upscale rental units.
The house at 35 W. High St. sits amid other houses of similar age and heritage, perched on a rise on the south side of the street west of Indiana Street.
It’s now called Moore Flats, the name etched in glass on a transom window above the front door to memorialize its early occupants.
Construction contractor Josh McDonald and flooring retailer Jerry Reecer bought the property in August 2024 and have marshaled a small army of craftspeople to renovate it while retaining much of the original look and still adding modern updates. They also own a house next door at 41 W. High St. and earlier renovated it.
The Moore house originally had 12 rooms with six fireplaces. It was built, of course, in a time before central heating, electricity, running water and indoor plumbing.
