MARTINSVILLE — Local, state and federal law enforcement agencies have been involved in the effort to locate murder suspect Levi Camplin, the alleged shooter in the death of 48-year-old Jimmy Adams late Saturday night.
In what authorities describe as a “verbal dispute that escalated,” Adams and his girlfriend were allegedly shot just before midnight on Saturday at Carmel Apple Court mobile home park off North Park Avenue on the northwest side of Martinsville. His girlfriend, 35-year-old Leandra Martin, was also shot in the incident but survived.
According to a press release from the Martinsville Police Department (MPD), the call came in at about 11:45 p.m. of gunshots in the area, and when officers arrived, they found Adams and Martin suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both victims were treated on scene and transported to area hospitals, but shortly after arrival, Adams was pronounced deceased. Martin was listed in stable condition with a wound to her hand.
Twenty-four-year-old Camplin, however, had already fled the scene before officers arrived, reportedly in a yellow Dodge Dakota.
The vehicle was later found abandoned just north of Martinsville, and as of press time Tuesday afternoon, Camplin was still at large.
Indiana State Police, along with federal agencies, have been on scene this week to assist in the manhunt.
The MPD, which is leading the investigation, is still asking anyone with information to call the non-emergency number at Morgan County Dispatch at 765-342-5544, and since the Saturday night shooting, officials have already received tips from residents.
“I want to thank the community for their cooperation and assistance,” said Martinsville Police Chief Ryan Manley. “We’ve had a ton of people reaching out throughout each shift.”
Manley also thanked “everyone involved and all the resources being offered” from first responders, including Morgan County Dispatch, Martinsville Fire Department, Morgan County Emergency Management Services, the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office and the Morgan County Major Crimes Taskforce, along with the Indiana State Police and Indiana Department of Natural Resources, in conjunction with federal agencies.
Criminal history
Camplin previously made headlines for his involvement in a drug deal gone bad at a Waverly gas station in the early morning hours of Dec. 24, 2020. Two teens were killed in the incident and a third was wounded. Camplin was one of six teens on scene at the time.
In the days following the incident, authorities sought then 18-year-old Camplin as a “person of interest,” but he remained at large for days. He was later interviewed by law enforcement but never faced any charges related to the incident.
Since then, Camplin has been in and out of the local courts.
In 2021, he was charged in Morgan County court with felony possession of methamphetamine, misdemeanor resisting law enforcement, misdemeanor possession of a handgun without a license and possession of marijuana.
In 2022, he was charged in Morgan County with felony auto theft, felony possession of methamphetamine, felony dealing in marijuana, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
In 2023, he was charged in Morgan County with felony unlawful carrying of a handgun by a felon.
And in July of this year, he was charged out of Hendricks County with misdemeanor leaving the scene of an accident and misdemeanor driving without insurance.
